Cows

The Sudeley cow herd has been refined through grazing pressure with sheep on native hill country to produce a herd of low input easy care dams. First and foremost cows are selected to be retained using stockmanship. Knowing all the structural attributes important to sustain the quality in our herd. Excellent feet, good bone, well set shoulder, heavy coats, a feminine head with good outlook, width and depth of barrel and good length from hip to pin. Cows must be able to walk evenly and track well to climb the hills, have a well formed and even udder and excellent mothering ability. All these attributes are a necessity on our steep hill country and to retain the type of dam that are the engine room of our herd and tells the story for any breeding programme. Bulls and steers are a by-product of the herd and if there is no strength and consistency in the cowherd the progeny will be just the same.

We have identified two very strong cow families within our herd and felt it appropriate to name them after our girls. Both foundation cows still in the herd at 15years and along with some of their daughters and younger cows join the Embryo transfer team.
